Shadow sees the Space Colony ARK in a dream. In this dream, he sees his human "girlfriend", Maria, who is the daughter of Shadow's creator and Dr. Eggman's grandfather, Prof. Gerald Robotnik.

In this dream, the ARK is wrecked, and one piece of vital information is cut off from Shadow's access. Shadow is tormented by this lack of information, but he cannot get it to come to him.

So, for some reason or other, Shadow grabs a few guns and various other weapons, probably in a desperate attempt to look "cool", and runs off to fight his battles and access the information.
