Barrier Eggman (a.k.a. Barrier Robotnik) is a boss that appears twice in the game series, in both instances on board one of Dr. Robotnik's flying crafts.

Barrier Eggman is the ninth boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-Bit) and is found at the end of Act 1 in the Wing Fortress Zone. Dr. Robotnik appears this time behind a barrier where he cannot be reached, making this the first boss in the game where you do not attack Dr. Robotnik directly.

The boss area is between two laser barriers with a sliding laser beam on the ceiling which moves left and right, firing at Sonic. Also in the stage is three floating, spiked platforms. The laser takes a few moments to charge meaning it is vulnerable to attack at these moments, but the laser itself is too high to be reached from the ground, meaning Sonic must used the floating, spiked platforms to get to the laser. The laser takes 8 hits to destroy.

This version of Barrier Eggman is the fourth boss in Sonic & Knuckles, the seventeenth when playing as Sonic and Tails in Sonic 3 & Knuckles and the sixteenth when playing as Knuckles in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The boss appears at the end of act 2 of the Flying Battery Zone.

The boss is basically the same as it appeared previously aboard the Wing Fortress, only this time Dr. Robotnik has learnt from his previous mistakes and removed the floating spiked platforms which allowed Sonic and Tails previous to destroy the laser. Also, the left barrier wall gradually moves closer and closer and reduces the size of the boss area with the intention of crushing the player if they are not killed by the laser. However, soon before there is hardly any space left in the boss area, the laser damages something within the ship, causing it to start to explode. Once this happens, the barrier lasers deactivate and Dr. Robotnik flees. Therefore, to defeat this boss, the player must just avoid the laser until the ship starts to explode.

In Sonic the Comic #6, Sonic and Tails returned to the Wing Fortress Zone after learning that the wreckage of the Death Egg was about to fall out of orbit and crash into the Emerald Hill Zone. Once arriving on the Wing Fortress, Sonic came across the defenses that activated the last time he was here (in the events of Sonic 2), and was surprised to see that they were still working. But as Sonic knew how defeat the defenses from last time, he made quick work of them.
