Big Icedus is the ninth boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles when playing as Sonic and Tails, and is the eighth when playing as Knuckles. The boss is found at the end of Act 1 in the Ice Cap Zone and is found outside of the large ice cave when playing as Sonic and Tails, or inside the cave when playing as Knuckles. Regardless of the location his movements and attacks are the same.

The Big Icedus is a floating boss which swoops from side to side across the stage, protected by a circle of large snow balls which, after finishing moving around the stage, he hurls into the air, letting them fall in a shower to the ground at the player. It is at these stages when the boss is unprotected and vulnerable to attack. After all the snow balls have fallen to the ground, Big Icedus pulls them back up again to circle around the body of the robot and repeats the attacking patterns.
