It is a nod to the similar-looking Death Star space station from Star Wars.

The Death Egg first appeared in Sonic The Hedgehog 2. Sonic only explored a small part of the fortress. While there, he fought a robotic version of himself and a giant robot based on Dr. Robotnik. Although it appears to be destroyed at the end of the game, it lands in the ocean. The plot of Sonic The Hedgehog 3 sees Eggman attempt to refloat it. He is stopped by Sonic, and as he gets it flying it crashes back to the planet. Robotnik then makes a second (and successful) attempt to refloat it in Sonic and Knuckles. Sonic boards the space fortress and defeats Robotnik.

[edit] Death Egg II

In Sonic the Fighters, Robotnik has constructed the Death Egg II. It is generally similar in appearance to the original (though apparently a bit smaller). It has several sections branching off from the main component. Their purpose is unknown (although it has been suggested they are to mimic the Chaos Emeralds). The successful combatant travels to the Death Egg II and faces Metal Sonic. Beating him, they face Robotnik himself as they attempt to escape. As they escape, the fortress is destroyed.

[edit] Death Egg III?

A Death Egg appears in Sonic Battle. Sonic and Emerl travel there to confront Dr. Eggman. It appears to have powerful weaponry, including a weapon which can destroy star clusters quickly.
