The Flying Battery Zone is the second zone in Sonic & Knuckles and the eighth zone Sonic 3 & Knuckles and is giant flying fortress which appears over the Mushroom Hill Zone. At the end of the previous zone, Sonic or Knuckles latch onto the outside of the ship as it passes, whilst Tails flies on-board. The level was originally planned to have appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, taking place between the Carnival Night Zone and Ice Cap Zone. Sonic and Tails would have used the cannon to fire themselves into the craft, whereas Knuckles would have bypassed it entirely, instead teleporting straight to the Ice Cap Zone.

The Flying Battery appears in the Mushroom Hill Zone
The zone is a huge fortress with the bulk of the level travelled inside of the ship itself, but some sections also take place outside, leading to the danger of falling off the craft. The zone is filled with many laser traps such as those which magnetise badniks and metal spiked balls to the ceilings, and then drop them down once the magnet deactivates. As well as this there are several spewing fire traps.
