Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles is a red echidna who made his debut in Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and first became a playable character in Sonic and Knuckles. Knuckles is the current guardian of the Master Emerald, and his storyline is often tied to its fate. He's the last surviving member to date of the society that used to live on Angel Island. Since his first appearance, he's been a primary character in the Sonic series. He had his own spin-off game, named Knuckles Chaotix.

Dr. Eggman's Death Egg had been critically damaged in the events of Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and plummeted toward the Earth with Sonic and Tails barely escaping. However, instead of crash landing on the planet below, it was caught by the fabled Angel Island, an island kept afloat in the sky through the mystical powers of Chaos. The weight of the giant space station was enough to bring the island crashing into the sea. Eggman didn't give up that easy, however. He'd heard of the legends the island held and decided to find the power that kept it airborne: the Master Emerald, a super-sized emerald housed in the Hidden Palace with the capacity to cancel or strengthen the might of the Chaos Emeralds and with equal capabilities of all 7 in one. While rebuilding his ship, Eggman met with Knuckles and told him that Sonic and Tails had stolen the Emeralds and were coming to the island to take the Master Emerald also. With this, Knuckles stood to stop Sonic in his tracks and prepared for their confrontation.

Upon the duo's arrival to Angel Island, Knuckles made his move and jumped out on Sonic, making him drop all the Chaos Emeralds. Shocked, he watched as Knuckles raced off with the gems. The echidna then hid them in the furthest corners of the island. Knuckles then continued to hinder Sonic's progress as he fought towards Eggman. Nearing the end, Knuckles set-up a stand off at Eggman's launch base but was shaken off his stand by the launch of the repaired Death Egg with its Chaos Emerald power source.

Knuckles had fallen into the Mushroom Hill valley below the Launch base. Later on, he learned that Sonic was still about and the Death Egg this time dropped straight into the volcano housing the Lava Reef. He recomposed himself with a more aggressive assault on Sonic, outraged that he would seemingly destroy his home to stop Eggman. He eventually began a more active strike down and then decided to stop him himself, tired of leaving it to Eggman. The final battle between them took place in the Hidden Palace, but Knuckles fell and submitted to Sonic. Suddenly, he realised the truth: Eggman extorted him, using him to slow Sonic down each time while looking to search for the Master Emerald. With both distracted, he took his chances to steal the massive gem and use it as a new power source. With their differences settled out, Sonic and Knuckles followed Eggman and worked to take back the emerald from the Doctor. He hovered away with the oversized jewel, however, Knuckles too tired from the previous battle to use his full strength. He led Sonic further underground to a concealed sky teleporter that transported them high above the clouds into some ruins hovering over the volcano, the Sky Sanctuary, towards Sonic's confrontation with Eggman, and his most testing trial yet.
