SegaSonic the Hedgehog, also known as Sonic Arcade, Sonic the Arcade, and SEGASONIC Arcade, is an arcade-based Sonic game released in both Japan and Europe in 1993.
SegaSonic was the first arcade game featuring Sonic plus two new characters: Ray the Flying Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo. All three characters feature similar controls and abilities and up to three players could play at once. Rather than a standard arcade joystick, the characters were controlled with a trackball.
The storyline depicts Sonic, Ray and Mighty being kidnapped by the Dr. Eggman, and they must escape with their lives from Eggman Island whilst navigating through a series of deadly traps at the control of Eggman.
SegaSonic the Hedgehog was originally set to be a featured game in Sonic Gems Collection, but was excluded due to the original game being controlled by a trackball.
The object of the game is to manoeuvre through an isometric-styled sequence of levels, avoiding death. Players must get passed a series of threats including massive boulders, lava flows, rogue gears, falling stalactites, and others. A health bar is implanted on the screen as a part of the HUD, depicting how much health the player currently has. The bar will gradually decrease when the player receives damage, which can be replenished by collecting rings.
