Sonic Generations is a game released on the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Nintendo 3DS systems. Sega announced it as a celebration for Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th Anniversary.

[edit] Storyline

An unspecified creature has created holes in the time-space continuum, making a twenty-year time loop! The modern Sonic must meet up with his former self in order to stop this creature and restore time to its correct form. Together, they travel through many different areas, from the Sonic the Hedgehog era to the Sonic Colors era.

[edit] Gameplay

Players have a choice between Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, and they play through past levels featured from the franchise's 20 year history. The stages range from the Classic Era up to the Modern Era. All of Modern Sonic's levels have a mix of 3D and 2D, using the same engine as Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors in terms of his skills and gameplay style. However, Classic Sonic uses a 2D game engine, interspersed with 3D camera angles at certain sections of the courses. Both Modern and Classic Sonic's act of a zone must be completed to progress with the story.

In the 3DS version, players have to complete a Special Stage, which is in the same style as Sonic Heroes. There are seven special stages and are accessed after completing both acts in each of the seven zones. Similar to Sonic Heroes, you have to run and catch up to the Chaos Emerald within the time limit. There's a gauge on the bottom of the screen, which represents your boost power. The boost gauge is filled by collecting the colored spheres although, touching the spikes will drain the gauge. You are required to complete all seven special stages in order to finish the game.
