Sonic Team is a Sega development team, that focuses mostly on the Sonic the Hedgehog video game series. It was established in 1990, with the Japanese name 'Sonikku Chimu'. In Chu Chu Rocket for the Sega Dreamcast, on the Sonic Team logo screen, a Japanese woman says 'Sonikku Chime' instead of 'Sonic Team'. Sonic Team do not just develop the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, but others, such as Chu Chu Rocket and Ristar. Sonic Team was started in Tokyo, Japan, and was originally called Sega AM8.
Sega, in 1990, saw the large-scale success of rival Nintendo's Mario and Super Mario Brothers, and asked some of their developers to create a character good enough to compete with the new popular Mario. So Sega AM8 was spawned, and came up with the character 'Sonic the Hegehog'. Sega renamed AM8 to 'Sonic Team' in mid-to-late 1991, due to the large popularity formed for Sonic the Hedgehog, with the first game debuting on Sega's Master System, and the new 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog video games on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis. Famous Sega developer, Yuji Naka, was leading the Sonic Team project. In mid-to-late 1990s, Sonic Team became a highly looked up-to, respected company, even by Sega themselves. With the release of Sega's Saturn console, Sonic Team released many different games, along with their most-famous releases, the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, they brought out NiGHTS Into Dreams..., one of the biggest fan favourites on the Sega Saturn. They also released the new 3D spanning Sonic gane fir the Sega Dreamcast, Sonic Adventure, and it's later sequel, Sonic Adventure 2, and the popular launch title puzzle game, Chu Chu Rocket.
