Biographical Details
Sonic is a blue, 15-year-old hedgehog. He has the ability to run at supersonic speeds, hence his name. He is always running all over the world, rarely stopping for anything. He is carefree and relaxed; however, he is also very intolerant of injustice, and he will do anything he can to help those in need. He has also got a quick wit, short temper, and a fairly large ego.
Sonic's Conception
SEGA wanted a game capable of selling over two million copies and a character to replace Alex Kidd as the company's mascot. Several character designs were submitted by their AM8 research & development department, including an armadillo, a dog, a Theodore Roosevelt look-alike in pajamas (which would later be the basis of Eggman's design), and a rabbit. Eventually, Naoto Ohshima's spiky blue hedgehog, initially codenamed Mr Needlemouse was chosen as the new mascot. Sonic's blue pigmentation was chosen to match SEGA's blue logo.
Regional Differences
There are many differences to the biography of Sonic the Hedgehog, due to mistranslations of official media, and differing story lines. For example, the video games state that Sonic lives in a fictional area called South Island, along with other characters; where as the UK comics state Sonic was discovered by accident by Dr. Kintobor, gaining his blue colour by breaking the sound barrier while having his abilities tested.
In earlier games, Sonic is said to live on Mobius, but Sonic X shows Sonic living on Earth.
