Sonic The Hedgehog 2 Early Beta, often referred to the Nick Arcade beta due to its appearance on an old Nickelodeon television show, is a prototype version of Sonic The Hedgehog 2. This particular prototype was dumped by drx of Hidden Palace in July 2006.
[edit] Overview
From the inclusion of the zones to the music, it is obvious that this version of Sonic 2 is based on Sonic The Hedgehog. Not much new has been added to the game, with the exception of Emerald Hill Zone, Chemical Plant Zone, Hill Top Zone, and Hidden Palace Zone. Green Hill Zone is still playable in this version of the game, even though its collision and graphics data has been corrupted. Labyrinth Zone and Scrap Brain Act 3 are not playable, like Genocide City in the later beta, Sonic simply falls to his death. Final Zone crashes the game.
[edit] Major Differences
One bizarre addition is an animation which happens when Sonic runs into a wall. If he is running at full speed, Sonic bounces off the wall and lands on the floor. The sprites for this animation were first discovered in the later beta; presumably as a hang over, as this action does not appear at all in any other version.
Another glitch pertains to rings. If Tails is hit by a badnik, he can lose Sonic's rings, which obviously shouldn't happen. Likewise, if Sonic and Tails are hit at the same time, many rings will be lost, even if the player only has one ring.
