Sonic Triple Trouble, known as Sonic & Tails 2 in Japan, is a platform-oriented game, released for the Sega Game Gear in November of 1994. The game introduces us to Nack the Weasel for the first time. The game was later re-released on the 3DS Virtual Console service.
Dr. Robotnik, having had all the Chaos Emeralds in his possession, accidentally scatters them all over South Island whilst testing out his newest weapon, the Atomic Destroyer. He manages to recover the yellow Chaos Emerald and, after running into Knuckles, tricks him into believing that Sonic and Tails are out to steal them.
Whilst Knuckles heads off to stop Sonic and Tails, who are actually out to retrieve the emeralds, Nack the Weasel takes advantage of the confusion to go and collect the emeralds for himself, believing them to be treasure of high value. Sonic and Tails must now deal with Dr. Robotnik, Knuckles, and Nack, hence the triple trouble.
In 2011 it was announced that the game would be ported to the 3DS Virtual Console and the game was also included in the following compilations or as an unlockable bonus:
Sonic Triple Trouble is the first Sonic game in which the player does not lose collected rings when receiving damage. In this instalment, a total of thirty rings will be deducted from the ring counter between each hit during the first act, and a total of fifty during the second. Like the previous 8-bit title, Sonic Chaos, Chaos Emeralds are hidden within Special Zones accessed by collecting 50 rings and accessing a Chaos Emerald item box.
There is a choice of playing as Sonic or Tails, each with their own special ability. Sonic is able to Strike Dash/Super Peel Out as he did in the previous Sonic Chaos game, and Tails has the ability to fly.
