[edit] History
Both Yuji Naka and Naoto Oshima are generally credited with being Sonic's creators. First appearing in Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive, Sonic became the mascot for Sega and their then line of consoles. Since Sega departed from the hardware market, Sonic has remained the companies main mascot and appeared on several other platforms. In 2001, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Sonic series, Sonic along with the rest of the cast had their appearances re-designed and updated. The new designs were first seen in Sonic Adventure.
Sonic was later joined by more characters as the series went on, most notably Miles "Tails" Prower who fills the role of best friend and sidekick, Knuckles the Echidna, friend and rival, Amy Rose, who has a crush on Sonic and is always chasing him around, and most recently new rival, Shadow the Hedgehog.
[edit] Abilities
Sonic's signature ability is his amazing speed. His main attack is the Spin Attack which, when Sonic rolls into a ball, can destroy badniks. There is also the dash attack which has Sonic "charging" up speed as he rolls on the spot. Sonic also has an attack called the "Homing Attack" when he jumps and attacks enemies.
When Sonic collects 7 Chaos Emeralds he transforms into Super Sonic, a powered up version of himself which runs faster, jumps higher and is invincible.

Sonic appears in the following animated series:
- Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog - Sonic the Hedgehog (AoStH) full article
- Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) - Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM character) full article
- Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie - Sonic the Hedgehog (Movie) full article
- Sonic Underground - Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic Underground) full article
- Sonic X - Sonic the Hedgehog (Sonic X) full article
Sonic appears as the main character, either in the leader or hero role, even in instances when the cast of the series is large and filled with strong personalities. Firstly, alongside Tails in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, then fighting as part of a larger team of freedom fighters in the Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) cartoon which followed not long after. In Sonic Underground, a series which departs the most from the games, Sonic shares the spotlight with his brother and sister, the set of triplets being the children of the Queen of Mobius. Sonic X stays closest to the games.
[edit] Comics
Sonic appears in the following comic series:
- Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie Comics) - Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie) full article
- Sonic the Comic - Sonic the Hedgehog (STC) full article
As with the animated series', Sonic is naturally the main character and hero of both comic series', being part of a group of freedom fighters fighting against Dr. Robotnik. Whilst Sonic in the Archie comics is similar to previous portrayals, the SatAM cartoon being based on these comics, Sonic's portrayal in Sonic the Comic was slightly different. He was shown as a more flawed hero, sometimes acting arrogant or rude towards his friends. Nonetheless, he acts to protect the innocent and oppose Dr. Robotnik. Additionally, in Sonic the Comic, Sonic's Super Sonic transformation, whilst still being a more powerful and faster version of himself, also transformed Sonic into a violent alter-ego, prone to attacking anyone in sight.
