Springs

Springs are used to propel Sonic at a higher speed than normal, in any direction. They usually aid Sonic in his travels across levels, but some can prove to be an annoyance - for example, two springs at the opposite end of a path. Springs come in two colours, yellow and red. Yellow springs do not push Sonic as hard as red springs.
A similar item in Sonic 2 appeared, named a springboard.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a spring is used in one of Sonic's moves.
