A starpost acts as two different things in the Sonic series:

  1. In all Sonic games with starposts, when Sonic dies, he will be teleported back to the last starpost he touched.
  2. They can teleport Sonic to Special Stages or Bonus Stages.

They are also known as lamp posts, due to their appearance in Sonic 1.
