In the Sonic universe, many characters can become Super or Hyper via the mystical powers of the seven Chaos Emeralds. This power came into fruition in Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on the SEGA MegaDrive/Genesis. The Super transformation is a homage to the hugely popular anime series Dragon Ball Z.
 Sonic Transformations
 Super Sonic
Seeing a debut in Sonic 2, Super Sonic is achieved after Sonic collects all seven Chaos Emeralds and fifty rings are obtained. Upon reaching this state, Sonic glows gold, becomes invincible (though is still capable of: being crushed; drowning or falling to his death) and can push himself to even greater speeds. As with all power, however, there's a catch: One ring is used up every second, and if all the rings are lost, Sonic will return to his regular state. In Sonic Rush, he uses the Chaos Emeralds to defeat Eggman and Eggman Nega. In Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) Sonic can charge up energy and and do a special attack to attack Solaris at the end of the game.
 Hyper Sonic
This ability has only been seen in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. In addition to acquiring the seven Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 and Knuckles, seven Super Emeralds can be collected from the Hidden Palace Zone, and after all have been taken, Hyper Sonic replaces Super Sonic. In this advanced state, Sonic glows the colors of the Chaos Emeralds and can perform a homing style attack that destroys any Badniks on screen, while also being able to prevent himself from drowning.
 Shadow Transformations
 Super Shadow
First seen in Sonic Adventure 2, Shadow can transform into his Super Form using the power of the Chaos Emeralds. He is a bright yellow with red still where it was before. If he loses Rings, then his Super form stops working, so you always want to get some rings to keep him alive. Super Shadow has the ability to fly. In Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) Shadow can fire pure Chaos Energy blasts know as the Chaos Spear
 Tails' Transformation: Super (Hyper) Tails
Tails only has one Super Transformation and it has only appeared in Sonic 3 and Knuckles and Sonic Heroes which is Super Tails. To get Super Tails you need to collect the seven Super Emeralds while ONLY playing as Tails. In this form Tails would be protected by four birds (Flickies?) that will attack for him.
 Other Transformations
Through out the Sonic Universe, other minor characters have transformations.
 Dark Spine Sonic
Though Sonic the Hedgehog is most certainly not a minor character in the Sonic Universe, he does have a transformation that you don't see very often. That is Dark Spine Sonic. Dark Spine appeared in the Wii game Sonic and the Secret Rings to fight the Erazor Djinn when he has absorbed the power of the Seven World Rings. Once Sonic has absorbed the power of the Seven World Rings he will become demon-like creature with long, white stripes on his quills, and no pupils in his eyes to give him an eerie look. Unlike Super Sonic, Dark Spine Sonic does not need Rings to keep his power. But however, if he is hit without rings he will die. With soul energy he gathers from moving, he is able to defend himself from MASSIVE amounts of energy.
 Super Silver
Super Silver is the Super form of Silver The Hedgehog from Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) When you are going to fight Solaris Silver will absorb the power of the Chaos Emeralds and turn gold, similar to Sonic. Like before, Silver can use telekinesis.
 Burning Blaze
In Sonic Rush & Sonic Rush Adventure, if Blaze the Cat absorbs the powers of the Sol Emeralds she will turn into Burning Blaze. In this form, she is sort of pink and purple with little red polka dots. She also relies on rings, just like most of the other Super forms.
