[edit] Background

Tails' Skypatrol is a Game Gear-released, Japan-only installment in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, set due for 1998. Tail's Skypatrol is featured as an unlockable minigame for the Nintendo GameCube's Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut, as well as being re-released as a featured game in Sonic Gems Collection.

The storyline takes Sonic and Tails through an endangered island, in which the plot's leading antagonist, Wendy Witchcart, has plans to take control of it and turn anyone who opposes her into crystals by her magic.

[edit] Gameplay

Tail's Skypatrol takes advantage of the platform-type perspective. Unlike previous Sonic-based games, rings are excluded from Skypatrol, Dr. Robotnik is absent, and Tails is locked in flying mode while navigating through each level. If Tails should fall or bump into an object, then the player loses a life.

Throughout each level, Tails is equipped with a golden ring that serves as a weapon or used to break away obstacles. This ring can also be used to latch onto any found device that the player stumbles upon.

Being that Tails is suspended into flight, players will have to collect candy bars scattered across each level to replenish his 'flight meter', which slowly depletes over time.
