The Sandopolis Zone is the third zone in Sonic & Knuckles and the ninth in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. After leaving the Flying Battery Zone, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles escape through a hatch in the ship and land in the Sandopolis Zone. The zone itself is a giant, scorching desert filled with several sections of deadly quicksand and is known for having more puzzle-elements than previous zones such as several switches must be activated to open doors and pathways.

Sandopolis Zone act 2
In act 2, Sonic, Tails and Knuckles enter inside of a giant pyramid which is illuminated by burning torches. However the torches only last for so long and start to dim to darkness over time. As the light gets darker, ghosts start to appear and then attack once the pyramid is filled with darkness. Several switches are scattered throughout the pyramid to re-illuminate the area and scare off the ghosts.
